Get around Venice: a Little Guide to Public Transport

It’s a common question: how do you get between Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) and Treviso Canova Airport (TSF)? This article will cover both scenarios: traveling from Venice to either airport, or from one airport to Venice.

Let’s start with a quick overview of public transportation and taxis in Venice and the surrounding areas.

Public Transportation

There are two main public transport providers:

*Trenitalia: Italy’s national train service covers the entire rail network, including the connection between the mainland and Venice Santa Lucia Station. If you’re arriving in Venice by train, Santa Lucia is your destination. Unlike other major cities like Rome or Florence, Venice has only one train station, Santa Lucia, so you don’t need to worry about choosing the correct one.

*ACTV: This company operates local public transport within Venice, including the “vaporetto” (water bus) system.

Arriving in Venice

* By Train: As mentioned, your destination is Venice Santa Lucia Station. The train journey between Mestre (on the mainland) and Venice Santa Lucia is straightforward.

* By Air (from Marco Polo Airport – VCE): For a direct route, you can take a direct bus operated by ATVO. While these buses might be a bit more expensive, they offer a direct line from Marco Polo Airport to Piazzale Roma (in Venice) or even Murano. This can be easier than taking a private water taxi, especially if you’re staying in Murano.

By Air (from Treviso Canova Airport – TSF): If you’re arriving at Treviso, you can take a direct bus operated by ATVO.Important Note on ACTV Vaporetto Tickets: If you plan to use the water buses in Venice, remember that ACTV is a separate company from ATVO or Trenitalia. You will need to purchase a separate ACTV ticket or a multi-day pass. Be aware that traveling without a valid ticket on the vaporetto can result in a hefty fine from the Italian authorities, which you certainly don’t want on your holiday.Traveling from Venice to an Airport

* From Venice to Treviso Canova Airport (TSF): You can take a bus from Piazzale Roma. The main bus operators are ATVO and ACTT (local Treviso bus service). It’s advisable to check their timetables in advance.

A Tricky Situation: Early Morning Flights from Treviso Canova Airport (TSF)Many travelers ask how to avoid missing early morning flights from Treviso. I personally have benefited from very cheap flights departing as early as 6 AM. If you’re staying in Venice and need to travel to Treviso for an early flight, especially if you’re not staying near the airport, you might need to consider a taxi, which can be expensive.

Here are some recommendations for early morning flights from Treviso:

* Trains from Santa Lucia to Treviso: Check the Trenitalia schedule for early morning trains from Venice Santa Lucia to Treviso Centrale. From Treviso Centrale, you would then need to take a local bus or taxi to Treviso Canova Airport.

* Staying Near the Airport: The most convenient option for very early flights is to stay in a hotel near Treviso Canova Airport the night before your flight.

* ATVO Bus to Treviso Airport: Check the ATVO bus schedule from Piazzale Roma to Treviso Canova Airport. There might be early morning services.

My primary recommendation would be to assess the earliest possible train or bus connections from Venice to Treviso and then from Treviso to the airport. If the timing is too tight, consider staying near Treviso Airport the night before your flight.
