A Day Trip to Chioggia, Italy

I finally came back to Venice last year – but before my comeback I did some homework on my Venice vacation. A lot of blogs and publications suggest the short trip to Chioggia as a side trip from Venice.

Those blog posts and publication show the multi-coloured houses and bridges over the canal in Chioggia – quite identical to those found in Venice properly.

As I strolled through Venice, I felt the strong presence of Chioggia here and there. ACTV posts mention on Chioggia vaporetto connections and bus services from Lido. A tour guide at San Lazzaro dei Armeni showcased the fishermen’s whistle and other artifacts left there by Chioggia’s fishers.

On my 6th day of my one-week Venice stay, I felt the urge to visit Chioggia finally which has put in the backburner.

And I did not regret visiting Chioggia. I will show you how.

If you drive, then it is the most flexible and easy mode of transport. Chioggia is located just 45min-drive from Piazzale Roma in Venice. The final stretch of Venice-Chioggia route passes through the middle of Venice Lagoon which prides itself on iconic waterfront views.

If you don’t drive, Piazzale Roma has a direct bus service to Sottomarina/Chioggia hourly. Book a ticket online.

There is another way to reach Chioggia by public transport, but it’s very complicated. For this way, you need to catch a bus from Lido to Pellestrina, then change to vaporetti which brings you to Chioggia.

Chioggia is a walkable city unlike Venice where you have to spend so many days to feel like you have seen a lot of it – if you got one or two days in the Veneto region and would like to experience the piece of it, Chioggia is the perfect place to do so.

As I said, the ambiente of Chioggia is identical to those of Venice, let alone with the heavy presence of cars and bicycles – you won’t find those in Venice at all!

Thankfully, the tourist presence is much lower in Chioggia than in Venice. If you look for a touristic traffic escape but don’t want to venture too far from Venice, then I warmheartedly recommend visiting there.
