We’ve just returned from a short trip across Belgium, where we explored some of the country’s most touristy destinations on foot. Bruges was probably the most touristy place we visited, and we certainly noticed plenty of tourist traps as well as the iconic viewpoints and attractions that draw visitors from all over the world.
We also enjoyed a trip to the Belgian coast and spent some time in Blankenberge, which is just a stone’s throw from Bruges.
But of course, this post is all about food in Belgium on a budget. And we have some good news for fellow budget travellers: our lifesaver, Too Good To Go, is available in Belgium too!
Eating Cheap in Bruges with Too Good To Go
We had an incredible haul from Bruges Wok, which cost us just €5 for everything you see in the photo.
There’s a little story behind this Too Good To Go haul.
The Too Good To Go app showed only one bag available at Bruges Wok. We reserved it and arrived at the restaurant on time. We also brought one food container with us, as instructed in the app.
Then one of the staff members asked us whether we had any more containers that they could fill.
Fortunately, we did! We handed over our extra containers, and the staff filled them with even more food.
The best part? They didn’t ask us to pay extra for the second and third containers. We paid just €5 for one Too Good To Go bag — and ended up getting what amounted to three containers full of food!
All three containers came back filled with freshly prepared food that would otherwise have gone to waste. It took us two days to finish everything, which also helped us save money on food during our trip.
Honestly, this was probably my best Too Good To Go haul ever.
Cheap Eats in Ghent: Street Food and Mussels
At our final stop in Belgium, Ghent, we decided to indulge in plenty of finger food and street food. It was our way of saying goodbye to Belgium — although we already know we’ll be back in the future!
First, we found a small portion of escargots for just €5. It was an absolute bargain and surprisingly filling. A food stall at Vrijdagmarkt quickly served up this little dish for us.
My travel buddy also stopped at a food van at Vrijdagmarkt and ordered this mouthwatering dish:
We didn’t expect such a generous portion, especially with two small slices of bread, for just €10. Even better, we were allowed to eat under the canopy next to the food van.
It was pouring with rain at the time, so we really appreciated the kindness of the staff.
And the food itself? Absolutely delicious.
It was probably the most delicious mussel dish I’ve ever had. We loved the texture of the mussels and enjoyed every bite. We’re already thinking about trying to recreate this dish in our own kitchen!
Belgian Fries in Ghent
And finally, here’s the very last food we ate before leaving Belgium.
We went to De Lange Friet on the Korenlei.
We spotted this place during our boat ride along the Leie, and my travel buddy immediately became determined to try some Belgian fries there before we left Ghent.
So we tracked down the shop and went inside.
He ordered a portion of fries topped with mayonnaise and mozzarella for around €8. The portion was just about the right size for two people to share.
