Austrian Road Trip – Kufstein, Innsbruck, Mittersill and Zell am See

Hotels – if you definitely want to save money on hotels, you may look for the ones in Germany, but they locate closer to the Austrian border.

You may need to consider the border crossing time and traffic jams there – so we opted for staying one more night in Austria. We spend the previous two nights in Germany which made us travel back and forth between the borders which was sometimes troublesome due to spontaneous border point checks and traffic jams. For peace of mind, we opted for one night in Mittersill Alpenhof, a family-run hotel which offered us a 121 EUR double bed room well-equipped with kitchen utensils and even mini fridge and microwave as well as kitchen countertops. Guests have access to the hotel’s guest laundry for wash and dry, 5 EUR each programme. While laundry is going on, guests may entertain their kids with well-equipped playrooms just next to the laundry room.

What we liked about our room was that we got to wake up admiring this magnificent Alpine view right off our windows.

The hotelier was very patient and took a very good care of us – she provided the Sommerkarte for our booking which let us enjoy the tourist attractions and natural hikes in our region with some discounts or free of charge.

Zell am See

The Sommerkarte booklet brought us to the Zell am See and surroundings. My partner was very keen on playing mini golf and I accompanied him. After the full 12-rounds of the mini golf, we drove towards Zell am See and the pristine and tranquil lake.

It was our best decision to come to the lake on the scourching summer day. We strolled through the promenade watching yachts, children roaming around cheerfully

Kufstein Ritterfest

We spontaneously found out that the yearly Ritterfest (Knight’s Festival) was just going on during our stay. Then we drove into the festival venue, Kufstein Castle and entered there for 24.50 EUR pro guest. There was a 4-day entry offer which was about 52 EUR for the four days, the entire duration of this festival.

The entry also included the admission into the Castle’s museum area and the artistic performance, ranging from circus, duels, to the live music sessions. So we take the value of this 24.50 EUR actually pretty reasonable and cheaper. Everything there was medieval-themed, even the visitors clad as medieval peasants, princesses and knights or merchants. The artists and shopkeepers and food stall servers also got their medieval costumes on. It was short, half-day experience yet to peek into the medieval past in which the Kufstein Castle was at a crossroad of many tribes and witnessed the changing of hands in the region.
